A great number of young people fall behind in English and Maths, due in part to not having a stable home life, being homeless, or lacking assistance at home from parent/s who may not have the necessary skills to assist their children with homework.
These students risk dropping out of school and engaging in a downward spiral of behaviours such as becoming susceptible to negative peer influences, exhibiting bad attitude and taking risks. The cost to the community and individual of this behaviour can be devastating.
With the support of a Math’s or English tutor, YES Inc. can help support young disadvantaged people to stay in school longer and increase their chances of gaining employment in the work force.
Mentoring a student is a valuable experience for both the mentor and the mentee, and can change the direction of a young person struggling with homelessness and other issues. Regular contact with a positive adult role model can help a young person get back on track.
By mentoring a homeless student, you can help them find accommodation, provide counselling and support in their education and assist with decision making and life coaching. Mentoring can turn a young person’s life around.
Become a YES Inc. homework assistant and help young people from the age of 10 with their homework. A lot of kids don’t always get the support needed at home to complete their homework. This could be due to large families, parents who may not have the skills to help their child, parents working shifts or other family circumstances.
Homework assistants help young people complete assignments and gain valuable planning skills. With guidance and support these students can turn their schooling into a successful experience.
We are a not-for-profit organisation and volunteers make a difference. Without volunteers YES Inc. could not assist the many disadvantaged young people we come in contact with.
But if you are not a tutor or a mentor then that’s fine. We also need people to assist with the operational and administrative sides of YES Inc. We welcome people with office skills for filing, answering the phone, returning e-mails or helping us to organise one of our charity fundraising events. And any other skills that may be useful to us.
If you have a few hours to spare and want to help, please call in to see our manager to discuss what skills you have and what current volunteering positions we have available.
The YES Inc. charity works with vulnerable and disadvantaged children. As such all volunteers, tutors, and mentors need to have a current Working with Children Check.
The YES Op Shop is located at 53-55 Mahoneys Rd, Forest Hill and raises much needed funds thanks to the generous support of donors and volunteer staff.
Become a volunteer in the shop and have fun while making a difference to many young lives. Please feel free to come in and ask how to be a part of our shop volunteer roster. Shifts are available Monday to Friday 9:30am – 5:00pm, and Saturday 10:00am – 4:00pm. Apply now to become a volunteer with us.
